What this means for your day

🚫 Severe Safety Warning: The river is running dangerously high and fast. Fishing is prohibited — avoid all water access.

Final venue choice and safety call are always made closer to the day, but this gives you a rough idea of what the river is doing right now.

Booking Terms, Safety & Age Limits

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking once your date and river window are agreed. No payment is taken on this page – we’ll first confirm details by email or WhatsApp.

For safety reasons, our guided Vaal River trips are restricted to ages 16 and above. Wading in moving water requires a reasonable level of balance and mobility.

For current guide rates, please see the Rates page .

Cancellation & River Conditions

  • Can’t make it? We’re happy to move your booking to another date, subject to availability.
  • If severe weather, unsafe flows or very dirty water make the river unfishable, we’ll look at rescheduling where possible.

Please note: Vaal River Fly Fishing does not provide accommodation services.

Booking Request

No payment is taken on this page. We’ll confirm availability, flows and venue options first, then send you deposit details and a simple plan for your day on the river.

Guiding Yellowfish anglers on the Vaal since 2007.

Prime weekend dates and good-flow windows go first.
Midweek often means quieter water and less pressure.

How it works (3 simple steps)

  1. Send your booking request with your best dates, preferred area and number of anglers.
  2. I’ll confirm availability, flows and a game plan for your day.
  3. Pay your 50% deposit to lock it in, then we meet you on the river.

River trips are flow-dependent. If you’re flexible on dates, mention it in your message and I’ll suggest a few options based on current and typical flows. You can also check the Yellowfish tips & behaviour pages for extra context.

This trip is a good fit if you:

  • Are happy wading a flowing river on rock for most of the day.
  • Want to learn or refine nymphing and reading water for Yellowfish.
  • Prefer small groups (max 2 anglers) with focused coaching.

Leave blank for a single-day trip.

Frequently Asked — Vaal River Trips

A few quick answers for Yellowfish days on the Vaal River with Vaal River Fly Fishing.

Do I need my own gear and waders?
Yes, you’ll need your own rod, reel, lines and proper wading gear (chest waders and good boots with grip). If you’re unsure what to bring, mention your current setup in your message and I’ll advise before the trip.
Can complete beginners book on the Vaal River?
Yes, but you do need to be comfortable wading and moving over uneven rocks. If you’re brand new to fly fishing and nervous about moving water, let me know — we can adjust the day or discuss starting with more forgiving water first.
What fitness level do I need?
Expect a full day on your feet, walking and wading through current and rocks. You don’t need to be an athlete, but basic fitness and balance help a lot. If you have any injuries or limitations, share them in your message so I can plan accordingly.
What happens if the river is too high or dirty?
River levels and clarity are critical for good fishing and safe wading. If flows are genuinely unsafe or unfishable, we’ll look at alternative dates or stretches in line with the booking terms, rather than forcing a bad or unsafe day.
